The Interracial Vacuum in America

I recently Goggled Interracial and was quite disappointed at the results. Four Porn plus Video results were mostly porn, 3 dating, one religious (Biblically IR marriage is OK), 2 Wikipedia and eight sponsored links which were all pornographic. We have an African American president, the product of an interracial couple and yet our society still treats these unions as unsavory, or less than virtuous, fit only for taboo magazine articles. Try Goggling mixed marriage, black marriage or Asian marriage, guess what, no porn and even better there are positive returns offering services support, and of course the slathering of indignant righteousness. The African American movie Jungle Fever is almost 20 years old, time to move on and forget stereotype.
We have been married for 19 years and have 3 beautiful sons with such a diverse antecedence that it would be difficult to find anyone more American. Of course they are designated as simply black which they relish and was the law through the early 1900’s. Traditionally if any of a person’s 8 Great Grandparents were Black then they were required to ride in the Jim Crow cars. In 2009 we have so very far to go to recognize how self segregating the races remain today in America. Dr. King spoke of a Dream 46 years ago where white and black children would join hands as sisters and brothers. A measure of this dream has been realized yet the underlying culture still resists closure.
It is strange to encounter another interracial couple where it should be comforting at best or neutral at minimum. Yet we are so very guarded and tend to be private about our relationship because of what life has taught us through travels and awkward situations. Even family members often resent or disapprove of our choice and we accept their decision and move on, that is easy, we love who we love. It is the stranger who we must protect our children from, those who appear outwardly accepting but privately are vicious people that our boys would accept at face value. The innocence that must be hardened to prepare them for a society that says one thing and behaves differently is the tragic reality of raising bi-racial children today.
When will an African American writer or any writer for that matter take a serious look at this hidden element of our American reality? We are growing and are silent which makes it only a matter of time before someone figures out how to make money exploiting us outside of porn.
